Understanding Japanese society requires knowing the concept of uchi (inside) and soto (outside).

Why Does the Uchi–Soto Distinction Exist?

Behind this distinction lies Japan’s strong sense of community.

Historically, Japan was built on small communities such as villages and households.

Uchi = family, village, or company → a safe, trusted inside group.

Soto = outsiders, strangers, or other groups → a sphere requiring caution and politeness.

How Did It Become Rooted?

In Edo-period villages, people were strictly divided into insiders (uchi) and outsiders (soto).

Under the family system, the “household” was uchi, and interactions with outsiders required formality and distance.

Fun Fact

In Japan, the custom of removing shoes before entering a house also reflects the uchi–soto distinction.

The entrance (genkan) is the border between outside and inside. Removing shoes symbolizes leaving the dirt of soto behind before stepping into the clean uchi.

Senior to junior / boss to subordinate → Use casual or directive forms.
